Licuala grandis Palm Tree
Licuala grandis, commonly known as the Ruffled Fan Palm or Vanuatu Fan Palm, is a stunning tropical palm native to the lowland rainforests of the Soloman Islands, and Vanuatu.
The Licuala grandis palm tree features a single slender trunk that grows upright, reaching a height of 6 to 14 feet in cultivation. The trunk is typically covered with the persistent bases of old leaves, giving it a textured appearance. The most distinctive feature of the Licuala grandis is its large, circular leaves, which can reach diameters of up to 5 feet. The leaves are deeply divided into numerous segments and are often described as being pleated or ruffled along the edges, giving them a graceful and ornamental appearance.
Licuala grandis likes moist, acidic soil and when mature is comfortable in full sun as long as the humidity is high. In the sub-tropics, where there are longer periods without rain this palm requires some shade and regular watering. Indoors it will become a nice container specimen as long as it receives very bright light, warmth and its soil never becomes dry.
